Undergraduate education / training

Dr. G. Ekatodramis teaching a popliteal block

Education and training of medical students is an important mission which involves the whole anaesthesia team.

During the year small groups of future colleagues join us for an afternoon to get an insight in our daily practice. One experienced anaesthetist is responsible for a student group. This group is guided into the operating theatres with the aims to demonstrate them the art of anaesthesia induction. Airway management or anatomical landmarks for regional anaesthesia and the use of different local anaesthetics are usual topics to be explained. During these sessions there is no frontal lecture, but students are trained to practical experiences like to see, touch and feel as much as possible.

Prof. Borgeat’s lectures are listed in the university calendar of the University of Zurich.

Practical Year (Wahlstudienjahr)

During the 5th or 6th year of education medical students have the opportunity to get practical skills in different medical specialities. This is called the ‘Wahlstudienjahr’. Our Anaesthesiology Division is very popular among Swiss and foreign medical students. We offer up to 3 places for a period of 1 – 6 months. During this period the students are first introduced by the anaesthesia nursing team into preparation of drugs and perfusions, function of the respirator, basic rules in the operating theatre and recording of the anaesthesia protocol.

Thereafter they are fully integrated into the medical staff and each day they rotate into one of our 5 operating theatres together with a senior resident, a (senior) consultant or even with the Head of the Division of Anaesthesiology. Students are then introduced into airway management with mask ventilation and in a later step into intubation techniques.

Regional anaesthesia demands a great deal of anatomy knowledge. Here we focus on the most important anatomical landmarks and emphasise the need to have a complete knowledge of the anatomy, which is necessary to perform the blocks.

Structured Education:

Once a week, all students in the practical year (Wahlstudienjahr) and the residents meet with Dr. Aguirre and have a discussion of 45 minutes during breakfast about a selected topic out of: general and special anaesthesia, regional anaesthesia, pain medicine, pharmacology, physiology, anatomy, intensive care or emergency medicine. This new project offers the possibility to deepen knowledge in specific fields and to discuss some details in a small group. It should also offer a possibility to the residents to prepare for the board examination. In some cases, practical exercises in reanimation, airway management or regional anaesthesia / pain medicine will make sure that everyone leaves our clinic with solid knowledge in anaesthesiology.

This 'anaesthetist-breakfast-discussion' takes place on Monday from 06.15-07.00.
