Anaesthesiology

Area of expertise

We use the latest anaesthesia techniques to create optimal conditions for patients of all ages, including children, to have a smooth, pain-free operation and recover with as few problems and as little pain as possible after the procedure.

The planned procedure, your state of health and your wishes all influence the choice of anaesthesia. In principle and depending on the situation, we will offer patients partial anaesthesia (regional anaesthesia) or total anaesthesia (general anaesthesia). The two methods may also be combined.

Outside of the operating room, our work involves looking after patients in the recovery room, the intensive care unit, in the hospitals other departments and during the pain and anaesthesia consultation session.

Our department also places considerable emphasis on teaching and clinical research, in cooperation with the University Childrens Hospital Zurich, the Anaesthesiology Institute of Zurich University Hospital, the Physiology Institute of Zurich University Hospital and various Swiss and international working groups.

The department focuses on:

A) Regional anaesthesia = partial anaesthesia

Peripheral nerve blocks as a one-off injection or as a continuous process with a pain catheter (= perineural catheter):

Plexus anaesthesia for the arm and shoulder

  • interscalene block, interscalene catheter
  • infraclavicular block, interclavicular catheter
  • axillary block
  • blocking individual peripheral nerves

Blocking individual nerves in the leg

  • femoral nerve block, femoral nerve catheter
  • sciatic nerve block, sciatic catheter
  • popliteal nerve block, popliteal nerve catheter
  • blocking individual nerves in the foot
  • Spinal anaesthesia

    • spinal anaesthesia = lumbar anaesthesia
    • continuous spinal anaesthesia
    • peridural anaesthesia = epidural anaesthesia
    • caudal block

    B) General anaesthesia = total anaesthesia

    Intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA)
    Computer-assisted delivery of medication (TCI)

    C) Pain therapy

    Acute pain therapy
Chronic pain therapy for the musculoskeletal system (consultation by arrangement)

    Therapies:

    • Lumbar and cervical epidural infiltration
    • Stellate block
    • Fitting pain pumps
