Occupational therapy
Occupational therapy - of which the German name, Ergotherapie, is derived from the Greek ergon (work, activity, action) and therap (care, treatment) - is a form of medical treatment that targets all areas of a patients life and involves psychological, pedagogical and social aspects. It is based on the principle that activity is a basic human requirement and that this activity, when implemented in a targeted way, has therapeutic effects. Occupational therapy applies specific activities, adaptations and advice in a targeted way that takes account of individual patients needs. Gaining a thorough understanding of a person and all aspects of their life is a prerequisite for being able to plan and provide therapy. Progress made with treatment is evaluated, which ensures that patients have a tailor-made treatment programme that suits their own healing process.
