Our closely to the clinical neuro-urology related research group is dedicated to studying the physiological and pathophysiological basis and causes of urinary tract dysfunction (kidney, ureter, bladder, urethra, urethral sphincter, pelvic floor, prostate) and the development of therapies for treating such dysfunction.

We focus our clinical research on urinary tract dysfunction caused by neurological diseases (e.g. spinal paralysis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, spina bifida, problems after a stroke).

We have various projects underway at the moment:

  • Studying bladder sensitivity, with a focus on differentiation between different afferent nerve fibres
  • Developing methods for objective evaluation of bladder sensations (bladder sensation marker)
  • Investigating the link between bladder function/sensitivity and certain control areas in the brain fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging)
  • Researching the effects of medication on lower urinary tract function and bladder sensitivity
  • Evaluating various neuromodulation therapies as a therapy method for bladder dysfunction

We use a range of measuring techniques and analysis processes in our projects. The most importants are:

  • Urodynamics
  • Intravesical electrostimulation
  • Sympathetic skin response
  • Heart rate variability
  • fMRI
