What you should know about your upcoming stay with us
We extend a warm welcome to you and look forward to seeing you shortly at Balgrist University Hospital.
We will do everything in our power to look after you to the best of our ability and make your stay as comfortable as possible. The following information is intended to help you prepare for your forthcoming stay at the clinic. Have we forgotten something? Our reception team is here to help you.
Before your definite admission date (outpatient or inpatient) you will be given a medical examination in our preliminary examination centre and informed about the care we provide. Depending upon the treatment or operation the following will be clarified or undertaken:
- Nursing needs
- The operation will be discussed
- The anaesthetic will be discussed
- Blood sample will be taken
Orthopaedic aids will be organised by the preliminary examination team. Walking sticks can be purchased from Balgrist Tec AG (rental not possible).
Please be aware that you may have to wait during the preliminary examination. You should therefore calculate half a day. Hand patients do not undergo a preliminary examination.
What do I have to bring to the preliminary examination?
We kindly ask you to fill out the forms below, and bring them with you. You will receive the forms together with your appointment letter.
- Anaesthesia anamnesis
- Admission questionnaire
- Consent form
Where available, please bring the following with you:
- Patient decree (living will)
- Blood group certificate
- Allergy certificate
- Pacemaker certificate / endocarditis prophylaxis card
- Accident certificate / daily sickness benefit insurance form
- Blood coagulation certificate
- Blood glucose diary
- Report from your GP / list of medications
- Previous laboratory examinations
Have you discussed suspending blood coagulation medication with the doctor or have you been informed about the possibility? Please refer to the enclosure “Important information about medication” and bring along sufficient medication for the duration of your stay (plus 2-3 days) in the original packaging.
Illness before admission
Being unwell, having an influenza infection or uncontrolled high blood pressure might lead to a situation where the operation has to be cancelled. If you happen to feel unwell during the week before the operation please contact the medical secretary for the physician/team responsible for your treatment.

Our waiting rooms 1-3, as well as the Polyclinic Orthopaedics reception and the preliminary examination room, offer a calming ambience. Rooms flooded with light and comfortable seating are designed to make your stay even more pleasant.
On the day of admission
The admission date is to be found on your appointment letter. As a rule you will be admitted to the clinic on the day of, or the day before, your operation. Please complete the documents sent to you and bring them along. On arrival, please register at one of our registration terminals near the main entrance, or proceed to the reception desk. By arriving on time you are helping to ensure that everything runs smoothly.
Checklist for your hospital stay
In order to make your stay at our clinic comfortable please bring with you:
- Health insurance certificate
- Nightdress, pyjamas
- Dressing gown, if necessary
- Slippers and trainers
- Stout shoes (e.g. After a hip operation)
- Swimsuit for aqua-therapy (in particular for shoulder and rheumatic patients and rehabilitation)
- Jacket and shoes for walking in the woods (patients suffering from rheumatism)
- Please also bring along a 5-franc piece for the safe in your room
We recommend that you leave valuables, especially jewellery and expensive watches, at home. Balgrist University Hospital cannot be held liable for losses or theft.
Nail varnish and/or gel nails on hands and feet must be removed before an operation takes place. Please bring along all medication in the original packaging.
Patient chip cards
On the day of your admission, you will be provided with a chip card, which you can use to pay for various services (e.g. phone calls, refreshments from the cafeteria, etc.) during your stay in the clinic. A top-up machine is located at the main entrance and accepts either cash or EC Cards / Postcards. Any credit remaining on your card will be refunded when you are discharged from the clinic. Do not hesitate to contact a member of the nursing staff or reception if you have any questions.
Internet , television, telephone
We are happy to provide our patients and visitors with free wi-fi. If you are an inpatient all information about the WLAN can be found in the patient information folder in your room. Visitors and outpatients can request access via SMS.

- Register using your mobile phone number (you will receive a PIN via SMS)
- Please enter the four-digit code in the field “PIN”
- Read the GTCs and confirm by ticking before clicking “Login”
You have a separate telephone line at your disposal and may receive calls by phone directly from 7 am until 10 pm (round-the-clock in private rooms). The charges for phone calls will be debited from your chip card. Instructions for using the phone and internet connection will be provided at the time you receive your chip card on the day of admittance.
Radio and Television
All our rooms are equipped with radio and television. The chip card can also be used to operate the radio and TV. For patients insured for the general ward a charge is made (CHF 5 per day) for television reception; a special ruling applies to long stays.
Should any relatives wish to spend the night at the clinic during your stay, we can provide a rooming-in service. The bed allocation service (tel. 044 386 30 30) will be pleased to provide you with information about availability and charges.
If your insurance covers you for the general ward or a semi-private room, but you would like to take advantage of additional comfort and a choice of doctor during your stay, you can upgrade to a private room.
Please contact the inpatient admissions desk before your arrival to discuss this matter (tel. 044 386 30 35). We will be happy to advise you of the options, procedure and costs involved in an upgrade and take all the necessary steps to meet your needs. Unfortunately, room-only upgrades cannot be arranged.
