Spinal Cord Injury Research
The research laboratory of the Spinal Cord Injury Centre at Balgrist University Hospital is engaged in current basic research into spinal injuries and developing new methods of treatment for people with paraplegia and tetraplegia.
Balgrist Campus – the unique building complex for research on the musculoskeletal system – is home to research groups working in various fields but under the same roof, guaranteeing the direct exchange of ideas and experience.
Focus of Research
- Randomized controlled clinical trials of novel neuroregenerative/-protective approaches to enhance functional recovery after spinal cord injury.
- Development of sensitive neurophysiological and neuroimaging biomarkers (advanced MRI) for diagnosis, prognosis, tracking degeneration and recovery after spinal cord injury.
- Improved understanding of neuropathic pain using multimodal approaches (clinical, neurophysiological, neuroimaging).
- Evaluation of new diagnostic tools and treatment of lower urinary tract function.
- Neurorehabilitation - designing and testing interventions to improve movement, gait, and balance including robotics and movement-analysis techniques.
- Using cerebrospinal fluid pressure dynamics as a biomechanical marker to quantify spinal cord compression,

Team
Our team consists of movement scientists, engineers, doctors, and therapists, who work together on new approaches, interpret the findings, and implement them in rehabilitation.
Cooperation
Intensive cooperation with our partner institutes is a key component in the development of our research projects.
Research projects
The research laboratory develops new treatment methods for paraplegic and quadricplegic patients, and conducts basic research in spinal paralysis.
Funding
The research projects are financed mainly by grants from various organisations.
Publications
Our researchers are continually publishing their latest findings in various professional journals. Click on the link for an overview of our publications.
Awards
Prizes and awards of current research projects in paraplegia in cooperation with the ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich.
