Neurology

The department of neurology and neurophysiology is highly specialized in the treatment of nerve diseases of the spinal cord and peripheral nervous system.

Working closely with other teams (spine surgery, neurourology, radiology, orthopedics, and rheumatology), we investigate spinal cord, bladder, bowel, and sexual function.

    Areas of expertise

Treatment can be carried out in the Spinal Cord Injury Centre at Balgrist University Hospital, and encompasses conservative methods of neurorehabilitation, as well as the possibility of surgical procedures on the axial skeleton and peripheral nervous system.

We have many years’ experience in the treatment of movement disorders and spasticity using botulinum toxin (Botox®). Our experience related to injuries of the spinal cord is your guarantee for perceptive and professional care.

    Offers

Neurological examinations and clinical neurophysiology for inpatients and outpatients

    • Electromyography (EMG)
    • Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP)
    • Motor evoked potentials (MEP)
    • Nerve conduction studies (NCS)
    • Reflex testing Sympathetic skin response (SSR)
    • Botulinum toxin (injection for local muscle spasticity and dystonia)
    • Functional electrostimulation (FES)
    • Assessment of paralysed muscles
    • Intraoperative neurological monitoring (keeping an eye on motor and sensory nerves during operations on the spine)

    Our focus

Neurology and neurophysiology are concerned with diseases of the spinal cord and peripheral nervous system, and assess the functions of the spinal cord, bladder, intestines and sexual organs. Differentiated clinical examination and diagnostic investigations to measure nerve function allow us to determine and record nerve damage precisely, in order to identify the cause. Our interdisciplinary work involves interactions with the in-house departments of spinal surgery, neuro-urology, radiology, orthopaedics, and rheumatology. Our goal is to develop a personalised treatment programme for each patient, and to estimate the prognosis as accurately as possible.
