Nursing education and training

After a thorough introductory phase, trainees are guided into their future careers. Dedicated nursing tutors and specialists mentor the learning process. Against a background of extensive specialist knowledge and experience, they benefit from learning how to meet the many challenges professionally and efficiently.

  • Nursing staff in training can gain necessary professional skills in an open and friendly working atmosphere

Nursing education

Licensed Nurse, Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training

Training to become a licensed nurse lasts three years and concludes with a Federal Diploma.

  • We recommend that you come for a few taster days in our facilities beforehand, and attend an information event at Careum, our partner education and training center.

Requirements

  • Training to become a licensed nurse can start immediately after the end of compulsory education
  • Completed secondary school level A or B or successfully gained federal certification as an Assistent/in Gesundheit und Soziales (AGS) [qualified care assistant]
  • Secondary school level A with mean grade of 4.5 in German and mathematics
  • Secondary school level B with mean grade of 5.0 in German and mathematics
  • With very good school performance, training can be carried out with integrated studies for a vocational baccalaureate. Further information on this training can be found at Careum Bildungszentrum

Registered Nurse, Advanced Federal Diploma of Higher Education

Training usually lasts three years. If you already hold a Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training, it is possible to complete your training in a shorter period of two years.
Half of the time is spent in a training center and half in practical work.

Direct employment
We are happy to offer direct employment with good salaries to nurses studying for the Advanced Federal Diploma of Higher Education, when they want to remain at Balgrist for all the practical attachments throughout their training

Assignment from the training centers
Nurses studying for the Advanced Federal Diploma of Higher Education at the Careum and ZAG training centers are assigned to us for one or more practical attachments and also benefit from good pay levels.

  • 3-year basic training with a federal certificate of competence or a general qualification for university entrance (FMS ID or Matura)
  • Job suitability assessment from Careum or ZAG including a practical two-day suitability assessment at Balgrist University Hospital

Qualification

Bachelor of Science Nursing

Three years of full-time study concludes with a BSc Nursing and a diploma as diplomierte Pflegefachperson FH. Balgrist University Hospital offers practical modules as part of the bachelor studies in nursing.

Additional Module C

After the regular completion of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, we offer internship positions (additional module C) according to the requirements of the ZHAW in one of our departments of orthopedics or paraplegiology. Students in supplementary module C are supervised and accompanied by the nursing training team and a reference person in the department and in everyday nursing care for the entire duration of the internship.

For the additional module C, we are also happy to accept students who need to complete more than 6 months of internships, but the minimum duration of the internship is three months. In this case, we hire students at excellent salary conditions.
