Diagnostic invesitgation and treatment of the spinal cord
Our university Spinal Cord Injury Centre is unique in Switzerland and an international leader in neurophysiological diagnostic investigation and intraoperative neuromonitoring of nerve disorders in the arms and legs, as well as the spinal cord.
Precise prognosis of clinical conditions
Nerve diseases and injuries can be diagnosed reliably: we are able to determine both the extent and course of the clinical condition and make a fairly accurate prognosis. This information helps us to determine the most appropriate therapy and to monitor the continuing success of treatment.
Detailed neurological diagnostic investigation
Our clinical neurological and neurophysiological investigations can demonstrate the very different nervous disorders of the arm/leg nerves or spinal cord. In this way, we can clearly distinguish between irritation of the nerves (lumbago, for example) and nerve diseases or injuries. Taking the findings together with spinal cord imaging, we can make a precise and detailed diagnosis.
For optimal treatment planning, we need to predict the course of the disease or complaint in order to organise targeted treatment with the patient and the treatment team (so that treatment is not too late or excessive).
Monitoring the clinical condition and the course of treatment
The effects of treatment are monitored by means of well-planned follow-up examinations and careful assessment of the treatment goals. If necessary, treatment is adjusted according to the patient’s needs.
The Spinal Cord Injury Centre ensures comprehensive care for people with spinal cord injuries – from treatment in the acute phase to long-term rehabilitation. Combining the medical specialties of neurology, urology, orthopedics and general internal medicine, Prof. Armin Curt und his team offer holistic care. Specially trained nursing staff, therapists, and counsellors make sure that patients staying long term are treated in a highly competent yet friendly manner.
